The Forgotten Independence Day
Did you know that July 2nd is the actual day America declared its independence from Great Britain?
On July 2, 1776, the Second Continental Congress met at the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall) and voted unanimously (12-0, with New York abstaining) to adopt the Lee Resolution. This historic vote formally declared that the colonies were “free and independent States,” totally absolved from the British Crown.
The atmosphere inside the hall was incredibly tense. British warships were already arriving in New York Harbor. Every delegate in that room knew that casting a “yes” vote meant they were officially committing treason, a crime punishable by public hanging.
Knowing the heavy hand of war was about to fall upon them, the colonists turned to the ultimate authority. Outside the hall, churches across America held fervent prayer vigils. Pastors gathered their congregations to intercede for the protection of the delegates, preaching that standing up for God-given liberty was a holy duty.
Built Upon the Bedrock
The logic, language, and actions of July 2, 1776, were deeply rooted in Biblical truth. Psalm 127:1 was central to their mindset. The delegates frequently referenced this exact verse in their personal letters, openly acknowledging that trying to defeat the world’s most powerful empire was an impossible task, unless God Himself chose to build and protect their new nation.
When we examine the history of America through the lens of this scripture, we clearly see God’s hand of protection. He poured out an abundance of blessings because the birth of this nation was completely surrendered to Him. God was our very foundation and our bedrock. He built this country, and He watched over it.
Looking Through the Rearview Mirror
Now, 250 years later, we look through the rearview mirror of history and face a sobering reality. As God has been systematically removed from our culture, His hand of blessing has been lifted, and our God-given rights and freedoms are eroding. In many ways, we find ourselves in a remarkably similar place to the believers of 1776.
The conviction of early Christian patriots was clear: God gives rights and liberties, and the government has crossed the limits God intended. That spiritual conviction was the single strongest argument behind American independence.
As we reflect and pray over our nation, let us pray the very same prayers the colonists prayed. Let us ask that our nation would once again surrender to the Lord, seek his wisdom, live under His divine guidance, and cherish the liberties He has graciously bestowed upon us.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the foundations of liberty laid on this day in 1776. Thank-you for the freedoms and blessings you have given us. Forgive us where we have strayed from Your truth and for all the ways we have drifted from You. Lord, please rebuild the house of this nation upon Your righteous word. Be the watchman over our cities and the builder of our future. We surrender our country back to You. May we never forget that true freedom is found in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
