The early builders of America did not just believe this verse; they risked their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to build a nation that God could look upon and bless.
Long before America officially became a nation, many had fervently prayed for its birth. Those prayers ultimately led to incredible action.
In 1607, three ships carrying 104 boys and men made their first landfall, entering the Chesapeake Bay. Fittingly, one of those ships was named the Godspeed.
Upon their arrival at Cape Henry, they planted a 7 ft. wooden cross into the sand dunes. The expedition’s minister led the men in a prayer of thanksgiving and dedication. He declared a covenant, praying that the Gospel would spread from these shores to the entire world, and that future generations would build a Godly society.
This spirit of prayer only grew. Throughout the 1600s, women’s prayer groups, frequently called conferences or conventicles, began meeting in private homes across Colonial America. In 1620, the Pilgrims explicitly stated in the Mayflower Compact that their voyage was undertaken “for the glory of God, and advancement of the Christian faith.”
The Biblical Blueprint for Liberty
The Pilgrims believed America had a God-given destiny, and so did our Founding Fathers. In fact, the logic, language, and actions leading up to Independence Day was deeply rooted in scripture:
Galatians 5:1 “Stand fast therefore in the liberty” This verse became a rallying cry for many during the Revolution. They believed that liberty was a gift from God and that government should not violate the freedoms given by Him.
Leviticus 25:10 “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land”
This scripture was so central to the American understanding of liberty that it was engraved directly onto the Liberty Bell, which hung in the very building where independence was declared.
Exodus and Deliverance: The spiritual mindset of the colonists mirrored the Book of Exodus. They viewed King George III as a type of Pharaoh and saw America and themselves as a people seeking freedom from oppression. Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin even proposed that the Great Seal of the United States depict Moses parting the Red Sea with the motto: “Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God.”
The Prayers of Generations Answered
This rich spiritual legacy led to the fulfillment and birth of our nation. Independence was formally approved by Congress on July 2, 1776, and publicly declared on July 4, 1776. The prayers of the faithful who not only prayed but followed up their faith with action, risking their very lives, were finally answered.
By God’s divine orchestration, one of the original ships that brought the foundations of faith to this continent was named Godspeed. 419 years later, in 2026, God has chosen to use Godspeed Ministries to retell the remarkable story of our nation’s founding, a story marked by prayer, faith, courage, and dependence upon Him. May it once again inspire a generation to pray, gather, worship, and return to God.
As we celebrate the 4th of July, let us first get on our knees and thank God Almighty for the nation we call home. Let us thank Him for His hand of protection over the brave men and women who have gone before us, and let us pray that our country would once again turn wholeheartedly toward Him. May God place His hand of protection over our nation, our communities, our families, and our homes.

Lord God Almighty, we praise You for the brave pioneers and founders who dedicated this land to Your glory. We stand on their prayers today. We ask that You awaken our hearts, restore our liberties, and cause this generation to turn back to You. Please protect our homes and revive our nation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
